 I. General Introduction toQinghai

Qinghaiprovince is a mysterious and attractive place which is located on the border of “the roof of the world” on the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, covering an area of 0.72 million square kilometers. The Yangtze and Yellow River originates fromQinghai, which is also the site ofChina’s largest inland saltwater lake, and hence the name “Qinghai”. There are 43 nationalities such as Tibetan, Hui, Mongolian, and Salar with a population of 5,180,000. Whenever you go toXinjiang,Tibet, Dunhuang orLhasa,Qinghaiis a must-stop for you to travel to the West of China.Qinghaihas tremendous natural and human resources which is the paradise of travelers and the heaven of braves.

Xiningis located in the eastern part of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is the provincial capital ofQinghaiprovince and the center of politics, economics, culture, education, science, transportation and communication. The population of permanent residents totals over 2 million, where Han, Tibetan,Hui,Mongolia, Salar, Man, Tu and other ethnic groups gather. The main religions are Islam, Tibetan Buddhism, Chinese Buddhism, Taoism, Catholicism, etc.Xininghas an average elevation of 2,275 meters and the summer mean temperature ranges from17℃to19℃. The pleasant weather makes it an excellent summer resort and it is called “China’s summer resort”.

1. Brief introduction ofQinghaiNationalitiesUniversity

Founded in 1949,QinghaiNationalitiesUniversityis situated inQinghaiprovince, which is the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau and located along the Huang River of Xining city. It retains strong ethnic characteristics and splendid cultures of various nationalities are woven together.QinghaiNationalitiesUniversityis a comprehensive nationalities university which specializes in liberal arts. The university has 15 colleges and 4 teaching and research departments at present, and it educates undergraduate, master and doctoral students in literature, science, law, economics, management, history, medicine and engineering. Covering an area of 1018 mu, it has about 11,000 students, including 1300 Master and Ph.D postgraduates, who come from 30 provinces and autonomous regions and consists of 36 ethnic groups including Han, Tibetan, Hui, Tu, Salar, Mongolian, etc. Up to now, the university has trained 81 thousand qualified students of different ethnic groups.

The university began to enroll international students since 1983. It is the main university to train international students inQinghaiprovince and able to receive China Government Scholarship students. Based on foreigners’ objectives of study and research, the university highlights its advantages in Chinese and Ethnic Chinese majors, develops foreign language and Tibetan language education extensively as well as Bachelor Degree education and Master education on relevant majors, and instructs foreign students on research in ethnology and anthropology. The university offers a wide variety of Chinese language textbooks available with to international students at different levels. It organizes full time and part time teachers who have rich teaching experiences to teach in Chinese, Tibetan, English and other national languages, by taking the mode of giving priority to group of classes and supplemented by extracurricular classes so as to meet the learning requirements of different international students. Up to now, the university has trained more than 2000 long-term and short-term overseas students from over 30 countries includingItaly,France,Germany,Switzerland,America,Canada,Japan, Korean,Indonesia,Kazakhstan,Turkmenistan,South Africa,Australia,BrazilandParaguay.QinghaiNationalitiesUniversityhas established relationships and is undertaking education cooperation with Dresden Industrial University of Germany, Nanzan University of Japan, the Higher Institute of Management of France, the Malaya University of Malaysia, Fort Hays State University of USA, Hannan University of Korea, and theAfricanInternationalUniversityofSudan. Meanwhile, the university is cooperating withChin-yiUniversityof Technology, Fo Guang University,VanungUniversity, etc, of China Taiwan.

2.1 The university has a long history of foreign language teaching, rich teaching experience and good language environment of Mandarin Chinese. It is approved by the National Ministry of Education as a university to recruit overseas students.

2.2 The university has strong ethnic characteristics and students from 36 ethnic groups including Han, Tibetan, Hui, Salar, and Mongolian nationality. It is convenient for overseas students to conduct culture exchanges and appreciate the culture of all nationalities inQinghai.

2.3 Disciplines of nationality including Tibetan language and literature, Mongolian language and literature, and traditional arts (thanka painting). The university set up 15 research institutions such as Institute of Nationality Studies, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Ecological Environment Research Institute of Qinghai Province, Tibetan Medicine Institute, Qinghai Provincial Language and Customs Institute. This creates an ideal research environment of national cultures.

2.4Qinghaiprovince has its unique scenery and rich tourism resources. The university offers good study and accommodation conditions, while tuition fee and living cost is low.

2.5 Han, Tibetan, Hui, Tu and Mongolian nationality lives together inXiningcicy and get along with each other very well. In particular, the location of the university is in the east area ofXiningcity which is also the main inhabited area for Muslims. There are many mosques and Muslim restaurants, and thus it is suitable for students from Islamic countries to study here.

Ⅲ. Admission categories and requirements

Applicants must have a senior high school qualification and should be non-Chinese permanent residents or Chinese citizens of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions, in good health, who are over 18 and under 60 years-old.

1. Non-degree Language Programs: learning Chinese and language and culture of ethnic groups

1.1 Long-term non-degree students: study more than 4 months.

1.2 Short-term non-degree students: study less than 12 weeks.

1.3 Short-term study group: more than 10 people and study less than one month.

2. Degree students

2.1 Undergraduate: study for 3 to 6 years (HSK 4 or above, if there is no HSK score, students should learn Chinese for one semester or one year, beginning undergraduate study after reaching the language requirement for undergraduates, and it is a pre-requisite to pass HSK 4 half a year before graduation; applicants for the Tibetan major should pass the Tibetan entrance examination organized by the university and begin undergraduate study after meeting admission requirements.)

2.2 Postgraduates: the time of study and research should be 2 to 5 years. (Having got

Bachelor Degree, HSK 5 or above. If there is no HSK score, students should learn

Chinese for one to two years. Students begin postgraduate study with HSK 4, and it is a must to pass HSK 5 half a year before graduation; applicants for the Tibetan major should pass the Tibetan entrance examination organized by the university and begin postgraduate study after meeting admission requirements. )

2.3 Advanced visiting scholars: conduct the research about national culture, history and economics, etc (more than 18 weeks).

Ⅳ. Admission time (Application time)

1. Non-degree students and advanced visiting scholars: the entrance time is March or September every year (Applications can be submitted any time); For short-term study group, it is better to study here from May to August.

2. Degree students: the entrance time is September every year. Submit a written application before June 10 so as to finish registration procedures.

Ⅴ. Application procedures

The international student himself or the person who introduces the student should contact theCollegeofInternational Educationin our university, and the center will send Qinghai Nationalities University International Students Enrollment Regulations and Application for Foreign Students to Study in Qinghai Nationalities University to the applicant. After filling out these two forms, the applicant should mail them or fax them toCollegeofInternational Education. For applicants who meet the requirements of admission, our university will send Qinghai Nationalities University International Students Confirmation of Enrollment and Form JW202 approved by the Qinghai Provincial Education Office to the applicant or dispatch agency. Applicants should take the above two documents to the Chinese embassy to apply for an “X” Visa, and to register with Confirmation of Enrollment, Form JW202 and 4 copies of 2-inch color photos within the prescribed time limit of Confirmation of Enrolment. After arrival inChina, the international students can use telephone or email to contact with theCollegeofInternational Educationand indicate specific arrival time of flight or train. The center will then send a car to pick up the student for free.

1. Applicants can download and print Application for Foreign Students to Study in Qinghai Nationalities University on website http://www.qhmu.edu.cn/. Please fill in the forms carefully and attach a photo.

2. Degree students should submit Graduation Certificate of Senior High School or certified copy, and original copy of certificate of expected graduation for prospective graduates. Postgraduates should submit the original copy of Undergraduate Diploma or certified copy. All materials should be written in Chinese or English.

3. If you have HSK certificate, please offer the copy of HSK certificate.

4. Copy of passport (ordinary passports within the validity period).

5. 3 ID photos (passport-photo-sized photo).

6. Health requirements.

International students must be in good health, all of them are required to have a medical examination before coming toChinaand no reports of serious illness, infectious disease and severe physical handicaps. After arrival inChina, if it is ascertained that a student does not meet with the health standards, the student must drop out and return to his country, immediately, and all the costs should be borne by the students.

The copies of application materials offered by the student need to be checked byQinghaiNationalitiesUniversityafter admission. Please bring the original copy of graduation certificate, degree certificate, passport and HSK certificate on enrolling day.

Ⅵ. Curriculum arrangements

1. Non-degree students:

1.1 Chinese class: Elementary Chinese, Intermediate Chinese, Advanced Chinese (listening, speaking, reading, writing).

1.3 Mongolian class (listening, speaking, reading, writing); Tu language class (listening, speaking); Salar language class (listening, speaking).

1.4 Investigation and study on history, culture, economics, education, local customs and practices ofQinghainative ethnic groups.

1.5 HSK tutorship.

1.6 Short-term study group: they have class in the morning, communicate with different nationality students in the afternoon and make study tours on weekend.

2.     Degree students:

2.2 Postgraduate: Please consult postgraduate curriculum of master's degree program for international students based on applied major (website:

Ⅶ. Course learning and graduation

1. Non-degree students: teaching hours each week are 10 to 16 hours (depends on individuals), 17 weeks teaching time each term. The duration of study for short-term non-degree students can be decided by individuals. Upon completion of the course, successful students will receive a Certificate of Completion.

2. Degree students: based on teaching plan of degree students.

3. Advanced visiting scholars: report the research progress toCollegeofInternational Educationat the end of each month. Upon completion of the training, the university will award a Certificate of Completion.

Ⅷ. Fee

1. Application fee: RMB 300 (one-time fee).

2. Registration fee: RMB 500 each academic year.

3. Tuition fee:

3.1 Long-term non-degree students (more than 17 weeks): group classes (more than 3 people), listening class is 4 periods each week (RMB 1800/term), speaking class is 6 periods each week (RMB 2500/term), and comprehensive class is 8 periods each week (RMB 3200/term). Students must choose at least two courses (comprehensive class is compulsory). Individual teaching course (depends on student’s requirements and teacher availability) is 10 periods each week (RMB 10000/term), and RMB 15000/term for more than 10 periods.

3.2 Short-term non-degree students (less than 12 weeks, including HSK tutorship); RMB 500/ week for the group of class, RMB 1000/ week for individuals.

3.3 Advanced visiting scholars: RMB 4300/ term.

3.4 Degree students: RMB 7400/ term.

3.5 Master students: RMB 9000/ term.

3.6 Short-term study group: The tuition fee is RMB 500 each week. Students can make study tours toKumbum Monastery,QinghaiLake, the Yellow River in Guide,DanxiaNationalGeologicalPark, Jinyintan Grassland,DanGeerAncientCity,RiyueMountain, Folk Village of Huzhu Tu Nationalities, and the town ofThangkaart inHuangnaTibetanAutonomousPrefectureon weekend.

Notes: For non-degree students who are arranged to choose courses in departments or college, one course set up from 1 to 4 periods is paid RMB 2700; 5 to 6 periods, RMB 3750; more than 6 periods, RMB 4800. (Tuition fee is determined by the numbers of courses)

4. Accommodation fee: RMB 1000/month for single room in International Student Dormitory, containing basic living necessities such as personal kitchen, bathroom (shower), furniture, television, washing machine and refrigerator.

5. Estimate budget of living expenses: around RMB 1000/month for one student to study inQinghai.
